Educational Program Topics
The plant and animal diversity found in Honeoye Lake watershed lends itself to a variety of educational programming. Browse the selections below to see where our natural resources, hands-on classrooms, and professional expertise can support your learning goals.
Aquatic Ecosystem Discovery
Swamp Channel Paddle
Travel by canoe to explore wetland plants and animal signs. Muller educators will discuss how the wetlands support biodiversity and benefit the local watershed. We'll examine how adaptations allow certain animals to live in this distinct environment.
Pond Ecology: Macroinvertebrates
Get a close look at what is living in Muller Pond using hand lenses, field guides, and microscopes. Explore the diversity of macroinvertebrates and aquatic plants and discuss how they relate to the food web, water quality, and ecosystem health.
Water Chemistry
Be your own mad scientist. Use water chemistry kits to get an in-depth look at water samples from the Honeoye Inlet. Learn about pH levels, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, and turbidity and how these variables affect water quality.
Wildlife Exploration
Camera Trap Biodiversity
Discover how to use pictures to observe animal signs and behaviors. Learn about trail camera placement and what evidence can be extracted using trail cameras. Compare images from multiple locations and make predictions about what you'll see.
Birding
Learning about birds is not always about what you see — but what you hear. Birding can be done pretty much anywhere, and, in this program, you will be guided in using multiple senses to make observations about our feathered friends.
Monarch Butterfly Conservation
Muller Field Station is a registered waystation for Monarch butterfly conservation. Discover the fascinating lifecycle of Monarch butterflies, including how they grow, their migration to and from Mexico, and what you can do to support them.

"I have been bringing my 9th grade Living Environment students to Muller Field Station for close to 10 years. This field trip is one of my favorite annual activities. The students are always impressed by what types of animals can be found around the corner from their homes — such as bears, bobcats, beavers, and coyotes! Many 9th graders have never even been in a boat before, so they love the channel paddle. Getting a chance to canoe in a wetland is such an amazing experience. They discover the importance of the wetlands while learning that teamwork is necessary to steer a canoe."
