Sustainable Operations

FLCC leads by example when it comes to sustainable operations. We practice environmentally friendly principles in building design, land stewardship, energy use, maintenance, and more.

Protecting the Environment Through Stewardship and Innovation

We strive to create a greener, more sustainable campus through innovative initiatives and responsible practices.

One of our primary focuses is on improving our energy efficiency across campus. We have implemented energy-efficient technologies and systems. With each investment, we do our part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

LEED-Certified Student Center

The FLCC Student Center was the first public LEED-certified building in Ontario County. The building meets criteria established by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED-certified designs maximize natural light, optimize energy use, and enhance indoor health.

Energy Conservation & Efficiency

We regularly upgrade our lighting, heating, and cooling systems for optimal energy efficiency. This includes the use of free cooling technology during moderate outdoor temperatures and automatic sensors that switch off electrical systems when not in use. We also use energy-efficient LED lighting throughout our buildings.

Responsible waste management and recycling are crucial to minimizing environmental impact. We promote waste reduction through composting, reusing materials, and careful resource management.

Zero Sort Recycling

FLCC uses color-coded waste and recycling bins all across campus. These standardized containers make it easy for students and staff to recycle paper, plastic, glass, and more.

Reuse & Donations

FLCC collects and distributes donations to help students offset the cost of living. Flick's Place provides household items (kitchenware, office supplies, bedding, and more) to students in need. The Suites at Laker Landing collects and redistributes materials left by students at the end of the year.

Organic Waste Composting

FLCC is partnering with our dining vendor, AVI Fresh, to compost food waste. This reclaimed organic matter improves soil, feeds livestock, and reduces landfill waste.

Chemicals & Hazardous Materials

FLCC minimizes the purchase and use of chemicals across the campus. We recycle electronic waste and fluorescent bulbs and safely handle hazardous medical waste.

Responsible groundskeeping and land stewardship are central to FLCC's sustainable operations. As a member of the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association's Lake Friendly Lawn Care initiative, we support the ecological health of the Finger Lakes for the long term.

Conservation & Stewardship

FLCC promotes an ethos of land stewardship through a variety of conservation efforts. Roughly 40 acres of the Muller Field Station property are under a land easement agreement with The Nature Conservancy. We also maintain an arboretum, greenhouse, serenity garden, and nature trails on our main campus in Canandaigua.

Lake-Friendly Lawn Care

FLCC practices responsible groundskeeping to protect Canandaigua Lake and the local watershed. The grounds crew maintains lawns without pesticides and minimal fertilizer use. When possible, we also replace vegetation with native plants that do not need mowing or herbicides.
